Regional Integrated Management Plan (PGIR)
The inhabitants of the Magdalen Islands are a people of the sea, whose history and origins recall the omnipresence of water, and whose maritime cultural identity is unique to them. Water is omnipresent in a territory anchored in the heart of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, dotted with unique bodies of water. Water helps to maintain the region's exceptional quality of life, enables multiple uses, supports a rich biodiversity and an economy based mainly on fishing and tourism. It also defines who we are: a united maritime community. Ensuring the protection and better management of water resources and the ecosystems intimately associated with them, while enabling socio-economic development in the Magdalen Islands, therefore requires an integrated management approach.
The Integrated Regional Management Plan ("PGIR") is TCR's main tool for planning and implementing integrated management of the St. Lawrence in the Magdalen Islands. The development of this PGIR is a process that began as soon as the Table was set up, and will culminate in the PGIR's submission to the MELCCFP. The PGIR is the result of a harmonization of actions to be carried out according to the priorities, issues and needs of water stakeholders in our territory, for the collective interest of islanders. Once completed and approved, it is intended to act as a lever for concrete actions in line with the targeted issues.
The PGIR brings together the information needed to understand social, environmental and economic issues. It proposes actions to be taken, particularly in terms of protecting, restoring and enhancing water resources and riparian environments. The coordination team and members of the TCR des Îles-de-la-Madeleine are responsible for coordinating the PGIR with other efforts currently underway on the archipelago.
